5 Creative Ways to Announce Your Pregnancy at Thanksgiving

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

The holidays are always a fun and exciting time to break the news that you are expecting a baby. It is especially convenient because so many of your family members are around to share in the joy, face-to-face. We have compiled our favorites to help you get your creative juices flowing:

Place a bowl at the door and offer note cards for your guests to include a note about what they are thankful for. Enter your own note about the baby, like “I am thankful for our new baby, joining our family on X date”. Have guests randomly draw a card at the dinner table and read it aloud. The excitement will stir as everyone takes a minute to figure out who is pregnant! OR Give everyone a place card at the table. Fill each one with a quote to be read aloud. Use one of the cards to quote yourself expressing the fabulous news!

Give a Save-the-Date party favor. Use metal napkin holders and place save-the-date magnets on them. It ensures everyone is sitting together when the news is broken and even Martha Stuart would be proud of this creative and appealing table setting!

Going to another home for Thanksgiving? Bring your hostess a gift and include a card that requests “an extra seat at the table in 2011”. The news, believe us, will spread like wild-fire.

Decorate the pumpkin pie (or even the turkey) with booties, pacifiers and rattles.
OR Create an inventive centerpiece.
Fill a cornucopia with the traditional items, and carefully place rattles, small bottles and small gift boxes wrapped in baby themed paper.

Leak the news slowly. Place your ultrasound picture on the refrigerator and see who notices first. Convince them to keep it hush-hush for a while as other guests start noticing too!

Congratulations on your upcoming baby, Happy Holidays and if you aren’t ready to share the news just yet, look out for our upcoming Creative Ways to Announce Your Pregnancy at Christmas!

The Perfect Hospital Delivery Gown by Mary Apple

Friday, July 16th, 2010

Pretty Pushers and our disposable delivery gowns are my dream; 4 years in the making. I gave birth to both of my children in these gowns and want all of our customers’ experiences to be as great as mine and so many like me. This is personal! I wore the Sushi Gown for the birth itself (it got SO messy and was glad to throw it away!) and then put on the coffee gown afterward  and all of the staff loved it!

The main point of the Pretty Pushers gown…it’s supposed to do its job…look fashionable, function during labor (hence the monitor opening and low cut back for the epidural), and then be thrown away.

I am very involved in every step of the manufacturing of our products and want to take this opportunity to detail the many facets of the gown I love so much:

Style: Just because the gown is disposable, doesn’t mean it has to be lacking in style. This gown truly is adorable; A great way to make those delivery photos stand out amongst the crowd and make mom feel like the star she really is!

Function: All the knots can be untied and adjusted if need be. And if the slit in the front of the gown for the monitor seems too large (this makes sense when you’re on the labor bed with 2 monitors strapped around your belly!), all you have to do is pull the ties in the front passed the actual tie (so that you’re sort of pulling the  dress in with the tie itself), and then you can walk around without feeling ‘exposed’!

There are of course lots of companies that have manufactured ‘delivery gowns’ with lots of buttons or satin trims that cost upwards of $80…but really, what is the point of bringing such a gown to wear during such a messy experience when the hospital won’t wash it for you, and otherwise it would sit soiled in a bag for 36+ hours until you get home?

Environmentally Conscious: It is very important to us that if we are going to offer a disposable product, it really has to be ‘disposable’…and able to break down easily in landfills. So…that is why there are only a couple of seams and no hems, pure 100% cotton knit, and dyed with water-based materials. Yes, we could have made a gown with buttons and spandex and overlocked seams…but that would take 10 years to break down – not 5 months.

Made In USA: We get pressured all the time to take production to China or India, (like many big-box chains), but frankly I’d rather struggle for a few years than to think that I’d fed into this horrible recession, as I think that’s the core of how this whole financial mess got started….greedy American companies shipping our jobs away.

The point is this: If you decide to purchase a gown from Happy Mama Gifts, I am certain that you will love the product and can feel secure in knowing that, although this is a gorgeous delivery gown that you will appreciate in memory for years to come, you are also making a social and economically sound decision. I appreciate your business. Enjoy!

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

Everyone loves a well thought out gift. Stand out from the crowd with a winning combination designed to make a splash! Here are our 5 favorite pregnancy gift combos:

Congratulations!
Mama Mio Congratulations! pregnancy care kit PLUS From The Hips pregnancy book

This is the perfect gift to kick start a great pregnancy. The body care kit is all about getting bigger and helping her body grow with ease. The book is the hands-down favorite for every mom looking to explore the many upcoming changes and parenting choices (without being preachy!).

Pregnancy Comfort
Boppy Total Body Pregnancy Pillow PLUS Psi Band drug-free nausea aide

Pregnancy can be difficult for any mommy-to-be due to all the discomfort she will encounter over the entire 9 months. This is a gift that will let her know you care about her and want to help ease that discomfort.

Getting ready for D-Day
Laugh & Learn About Childbirth DVD PLUS a custom duffle and hospital care kit

Google searches for “birth classes” and “what to pack for the hospital” are off the charts! We should call this combo the Anxiety Cure. The DVD saves money and time compared to the traditional weekly class but allows mom to review and learn at her own pace. The custom duffle is embroidered with baby’s name (making it a great piece of luggage for baby) and contains comfort aides, toiletries and a drug store guide to all the necessities.

Here Comes Baby!
Designer maternity hospital gown (on the cheap!) PLUS labor ease kit

We’re surprised maternity hospital gowns didn’t get popular sooner! Sure, it seems a little over the top at first. But consider how many pictures are taken on that one day. Believe me, being able to look back at those photos and feel like a star is priceless! Pretty Pushers do that for mom-to-be at an affordable price. The labor ease kit does just what it promises and helps soothe and calm mom-to-be right through labor. This is a great combo that is sure to be a unique baby shower gift!

Creating Pregnancy Memories
My Digi Time Capsule and Belly Casting Kit

Everyone thinks of baby books and bronzed booties, but few think of keepsaking the moments of pregnancy until it is too late. The time capsule is a great 21st century version of the old journal, equipped with an image vault and topics to help mom keep track of her changes and thoughts throughout the experience. The belly cast is a great way to hold on to her pregnant form. No matter what she says about it now, she will miss it when it is gone!

Why I Love Babywearing

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010

My son is 7 months old, and I still wear him every day. I love baby wearing for many reasons, but the top three that come to mind are:

1. Bonding. Wearing your baby close to your body promotes bonding. It makes sense: instead of placing your baby in a crib or in a stroller, expecting him to be quiet, you recognize that he would much rather be held, and hold him close to you for several hours each day. Babywearing promotes attachment, while laying your baby down and away from you is a way of detaching yourself from him (and yes, we do recognize that sometimes you NEED to put your baby down!)

2. Less Fussing. Babies are happier when they are carried. There’s plenty of research to support that, but frankly, most parents don’t need research to tell them that their babies are happiest when they are being carried.

3. Convenience. Babywearing is very convenient. Unlike pushing a stroller, or carrying your baby in your hands, when you use a baby carrier your hands are free and you don’t have to push, or to carry anything. Make sure you choose a baby carrier that doesn’t put a strain on your baby’s hips and on your lower back. We love the Moby Wrap.

Top 10 Pregnancy Gift Ideas

Friday, April 9th, 2010

I was newly pregnant with my first child and finishing up my first book on the experience of pregnancy. The final chapter read “That Old Gray Mare..She Ain’t What She Used To Be.” I burst into tears immediately.

Pregnancy is hard. The right gift can brighten her day, comfort and protect her body, calm her fears and prepare her for the journey ahead. I polled the girls and thought back to my own pregnancies. We have compiled a list perfect for “Congratulations!” (Or getting back in her good graces!).

Pampering Gifts: A pregnant body undergoes tremendous changes. There is no time in a woman’s life that is more in need of a little help and relaxation. For do-it-yourselfers, a book and a bath set can really wash away those aches and pains. Spa days are an oldie but a goodie. Pedicures, facials or a cut and color can make her feel like a star again. Our favorite gifts were body care gifts that would help us preserve our pre-pregnancy forms. Mama Mio Skincare makes an award winning line that really delivers!

Books/Magazines/DVDs: Especially true during her first pregnancy, she will want to learn as much as possible about the baby, her body and the events of D-Day (birth). Subscriptions to pregnancy and parenting magazines are great. Books that didn’t insult our intelligence or terrify us with only the down-sides of pregnancy are the best (try From the Hips). Another great option is a childbirth class on DVD. She can learn at her own pace and save money on those time-challenging group classes.

Journals/Scrapbooks: There are so many emotions and life-altering moments/changes associated with a pregnancy. Yet, many people don’t even think to chronicle it until it is too late. Buying her a journal or a scrapbook will allow her to record moments and pictures that she can share with her future children or look back in a few months when she can truly “appreciate” her experience (with a margarita in her hand!).

Clothes/Accessories: An arsenal of clothing is required during pregnancy. This is because a pregnant woman’s body changes on a sometimes daily basis. She needs different sizes and different fits to get her through the nine months. Accessories are also a great option. They will last past the end of the pregnancy and a great accessory can help her focus on the areas of her body that aren’t spreading (like her neck!).

Cravings: That little pink line is usually closely followed with a set of cravings that must be addressed! Pick up dinner from that Mexican restaurant she has been dreaming about or offer to make a midnight run to the ice cream shop. Gift cards are nice, because they allow her to use them when the craving hits high-gear!

Coupons: I hate giving personalized coupon books, but I love getting them. If you can put in the effort to perform the given task at a moments notice, she will love the thoughtfulness.

Gifts of Comfort: A pregnancy body pillow is a must. Pajamas made for her growing body and plush slippers can be a great end-of-day reward. If she is experiencing morning sickness, drug-free remedies can be a life saver!

Meals: Many pregnant women simply run out of batteries by the time dinner rolls around. Give her a night off with meal delivery or one of those great workshops that help you make a week of dinners in an afternoon.

Birth Gifts: Pregnancy almost always produces anxiety about the upcoming D-Day. Helping her feel prepared with a pre-packed hospital bag, a birth ball (maybe with a DVD on how to use it?) or a calming CD of her favorite music are all great ideas. Find out if her hospital allows champagne. They often will allow you to use their refrigerator and could help you create a celebration kit with strawberries and chocolate cigars.

Post Pregnancy Gifts: Another area where mom-to-be wants to feel prepared. Think about items that are for mom as much as baby. Examples include a baby sling or a nursing pillow, because they will make her new life easier. Also, try keepsake gifts, teething jewelry or a great diaper bag that looks like a purse.  The key is, unless it is time for the baby shower, think of things that are geared towards mom. This is how you are going to brighten her day and make her feel like a star.

That’s it. If you have an idea that you think we should include in our next list, email me. Happy Gifting!
